Hizen Saga Bakumatsu-Meiji Restoration Expo

“Hizen Saga Bakumatsu-Meiji Restoration Expo” is being held in the Saga Castle area.In the main pavilion (Bakumatsu-Meiji Restoration Memorial Museum) you can experience Saga at the end of the Edo period dynamically, using the latest video technology.

1. Bakumatsu-Meiji Restoration Memorial Museum

2. Real Kodokan

You can experience the learning style of the "Kōdōkan", a famous school which produced great men, like Shigenobu Ōkuma, who helped built the cornerstones of modern Japan.

3. Hagakure Miraikan

Explaining how "Hagakure", the Samurai knowledge and learning originating in Saga, is actually useful in business and modern day life.

  • Admission fee: 800 yen (Real Kodokan & Hagakure Miraikan: 400 yen)

   *Admission free for students in highschool and under, and those with disabilities or handicaps, including one care-giver.



The Information and Communication Cafe in JR Saga station "Ishin Square". You can sample fine local Ureshino teas while checking out the latest info on the Hizen Saga Bakumatsu-Meiji Restoration Expo.

Menu includes 7 different types of tea served hot and cold.

3. Japanese traditional clothes welcome!

During the expo admission to the big three: Bakumatsu-Meiji Restoration Museum, the Real Kodokan, and the Hagakure Miraikan will be free for those wearing Kimono or traditional Japanese clothes.

You can find rental Kimono at the nearby the Real Kodokan and the Hagakure Miraikan at Yosoidokoro Futaba, where they will help you put them on. Why not walk around town in a Kimono?

4. Saga Prefectural Art Museum's three-man exhibit

-Forward Stroke Looking to Tomorrow- (Manabu Ikeda, Yuki Hayama, Kazuhiko Hachiya)

The three-man exhibition -Forward Stroke Looking to Tomorrow- featuring Manabu Ikeda, Yuki Hayama, Kazuhiko Hachiya will be held at the Saga prefectural Art Museum as a special exhibit featured by the Hizen Saga Bakumatsu-Meiji Restoration Expo. We are exhibiting works of artists from Saga Prefecture who are active in Japan and the around the world.

  • What are the highlights of the 150 year anniversary "Hizen Saga Bakumatsu-Meiji Restoration Expo" being held from March 17, 2018 to January 14, 2019? The end of the Edo period, which lasted for 260 years, marked an end to the Japanese Feudal system as well as the period of national isolation. This began the Meiji period which laid the foundation for modern Japan.

    明治維新(※)150年を機に2018年3月17日から2019 年1月14 日まで開催中の「肥前さが幕末維新博覧会」、この秋の見どころは?※約260年にわたって続いた江戸時代が終わり、封建制度や鎖国体制などが崩れ、近代日本の始まる契機となった政治的革命。

    • Of course the main draws are the Bakumatsu-Meiji Restoration Museum, Real Kodokan, Hagakure Miraikan, but there's also the Saga Prefectural Art Museum featuring artists from Saga Prefecture who are active in Japan and the around the world (Ikeda Manabu, Hayama Yuki, Hachiya Kazuhiko)
